Except for an occasional divergence into a country cottage where I succumb to the beauty of the natural landscape, I am a painter of people in urban spaces. I live and have a studio in Long Island City, an area of New York City across the East River. It is a short subway ride to Times Square where I sometimes wander about; looking, sketching, or clicking my camera when I feel the excitement of discovery. Sometimes I return to a place of discovery with my pochade box or easel, paints, and brushes on a nice day to paint on the street, or, if not so nice, in a cafe or bar when the manager doesn't mind. Curious onlookers pass by and comment, mostly to each other, about what I am doing. These are small size paintings that often turn into larger works in my studio. There is such an incredible diversity in an ever-changing city that, since I arrived here from Ohio about 50 years ago, I have never run out of inspiration.
